Legisa
Legisa Berhe lives in Mekele, Ethiopia. She led her peaceful life working as a shop keeper in her town. Mekele had been in a war. The rebels would plant hidden landmines all over the area. One day as she was walking to work, she stepped on a landmine. The mine shattered her right leg, and made it nearly impossible for the doctors to bring it back to normal. The doctors did not have the care needed for Legisa and an amputation needed to be performed. The amputation made it hard for Legisa to live. She struggled every day to live with only one leg. It was hard for her to have a normal life when the area looked at her amputation as an extreme abnormality and due to her land mine injury, this made her sound leg muscles weak.
When she heard that a clinic in the area was helping amputees with prosthetics, she was overjoyed. She made her way to the clinic and was fitted for a leg and sent through rehab to help her walk again. Thanks to the efforts made by donors, she is able to receive the therapy she needs and will soon be able to return to her normal life.
