El Paso, Texas. June 1, 2022: LIMBS International, Inc. has restructured its Board of Directors and senior management.
John Busch, PhD, PE, the longstanding Chairman of the Board, is relinquishing the chairmanship, but will remain on the Board. Eric Minelga, MS, MBA, a Senior Engineering Manager at The Boeing Company in Everett, WA, has been named the new Chairman. Eric has been actively involved with LIMBS since it was founded in 2004. Roger Gonzalez, PhD, PE and Founder of LIMBS, has stepped down from being an active member of the LIMBS Board during his UK/Ireland Fellowship on the Current State of Engineering Education and Professional Development (June 2022-May 2023), but will consult on an as-needed basis. Lucas Galey, MS and PhD Candidate in Biomedical Engineering, has been named Executive Director. In addition to his regular responsibilities of managing the organization’s relationship with partner clinics and shipments of prosthetic devices around the world, Lucas coordinates LIMBS' engineering and manufacturing efforts by directing design and overseeing research projects. Currently, as part of his PhD thesis, he is also developing and testing the world's lowest cost "smart" knee.

The organization's innovation combines technology with community support to transform the lives of amputees in developing countries. Its LIMBox program provides an ultra-low cost prosthetic knee to local partners trained to fit amputees on site. Community-based rehabilitation programs then make the prosthetic effective for patients through ongoing physical therapy, counseling and social advocacy. Drucker Prize judges recognized LIMBS International for its holistic approach to accessibility and affordability. The judges also recognized the organization's promise to further leverage the discipline of innovation. "It would have been easy for LIMBS International to be satisfied with its technical achievement of a $20 functional prosthetic," said Zach First, executive director of the Drucker Institute. "But it often takes social innovation to make technical innovation effective. And LIMBS International exemplifies this in the way they married their innovative prosthetic with an equally innovative local physical-therapy model. Thanks to their work, innocent victims of war and disease get a second chance to stand on their own two feet." Administered annually since 1991, The Drucker Prize, formerly known as the Peter F. to Amputees in the Developing World El Paso, Texas. March 1, 2018: LIMBS International, Inc. received a generous donation from Boeing to expand its mission to provide prosthetics (leg systems) and rehabilitation services to amputees in the developing world. Funds were raised as part of the company's “Boeing Moves the World” employee well-being initiative. More than 60,000 Boeing employees came together around the globe to support mobility programs for those in need. Beginning in July 2017, donations benefited six nonprofit organizations globally, including five military and veteran organizations in addition to LIMBS International. "Our employees are actively engaged in improving their health and well-being all while living the Boeing mission to help others and inspire the world," said Greg Marchand, director of Global Benefits for Boeing. The majority of the funds will be used in India, Indonesia, and Mexico. LIMBS will provide at least 273 legs in those countries; 90 legs to India, 50 to Indonesia and 133 to Mexico. Also, two rehab centers in Mexico will receive special equipment and training. The balance of the funds will be used by LIMBS for its other ongoing programs. “We are deeply appreciative to Boeing and its kind employees for this funding,” stated Oscar Gonzalez-Montoya, the President of LIMBS International. “It will enable us to fit many desperate amputees with our prosthetic leg systems and provide crucial rehabilitation services to teach patients how to walk on their new legs as well as positive emotional support.
